ABSTRACT

In Trinidad, popular psychology is highly visible in everyday life. Opening the newspaper on a regular day, readers will discover advice columns on topics such as depression (Ravello 2017a) or self-love (Ravello 2017b). International organisations like Dale Carnegie Training (2017) offer regular personal development workshops in Port of Spain, Trinidad's capital, and various other locations. Local self-help experts such as Dr Eugenia Springer give advice in radio shows and online (Sheppard 2011). And should all this not be enough, a walk through any large shopping mall, be it the upscale The Falls at West Mall or the more mainstream Trincity Mall (Figure 3.1 overleaf), or down any main street will lead readers to numerous bookshops whose shelves are stacked with self-help texts.
