ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes the personalistic approach to learning, and discusses the concepts of capability and wisdom. It explores the use of metaphor in learning activity and analyses the use of competences. Survey data-gathering exercises become empty rituals without a learning focus as a starting point. Resources and tools tend to get worn out and used up, so engineering metaphor can justify throwing used-up resources on to the scrap heap. The process has to work as a pincer movement where the problem to be addressed is analysed alongside the analysis for learning and change. Learning and change are the standard process used by traditional management consultancies and, generally, it is a poor model. If someone goes to a conference, that person is keen to share with others any ideas learned. Metaphor provides a way of understanding or interpreting relatively abstract ideas through linkage to familiar concrete objects or modes of behaving.
