ABSTRACT

WE rode from St Malo to a town called Antis [Nantes]. There we found the Duke of Brittany, for he keeps his court there and it is one of his chief cities. The Duke is an earnest, well set-up man and has fine men about him. 1 He showed my lord great honour and presented my lord to his lady with all her maidens, who were beautiful beyond measure. He sent my lord also each day drink and food to his inn and bestowed his fellowship on my lords Jan and Frodner, Gabriel Tetzel and Muffel. But he gives unwillingly and it is difficult to bring anything away. My lord received more from other princes, dukes and kings. We were ten days at the court of the Duke of Brittany. But at that time came news of his mother’s death and this occasioned great sorrow. Otherwise we should have stayed longer.
