ABSTRACT

Naturally, one could drink coffee in the Viennese Caf. To understand this one has to know that the Viennese Caf is an institution of a special kind which is not comparable to any other in the world. Viennese culture from 1870 to 1930, entitled 'Dream and Reality', the poorest and most unimaginative room was the one devoted to literature. The organizers seem to have difficulty in bringing to life the many literary geniuses of the fin de sicle. It has been said that without the "cultural institutions that the coffee houses were there would have been no Viennese contribution to the literature of the fin de sicle, no advance on the part of Austria to world literary status. In other words, the coffee house was much more than a place to drink coffee and meet friends; it was often the place where literary works were inspired, read aloud, and even written.
