ABSTRACT

John Macquarrie presents the unfolding of God's love through creation, incarnation, passion, and consummation. Macquarrie was a prolific writer who published some two dozen books. He sought to draw together existentialist philosophy and Christian theology. Macquarrie states wherever there is caring, there is vulnerability and suffering, or at least the readiness to suffer. Macquarrie explains the church is to spearhead universal reconciling work of God that is inseparable from his creating on the one hand and from his consummating on the other. Although Macquarrie understands the church to be much less than the kingdom of God, he clearly identifies the churches role in unfolding creation and ministering reconciliation even if the church falls short of consummation. Macquarrie states the human being is a creature who is creative, a finite being that nevertheless has a sense and taste for the infinite. Macquarrie urges the eschatological consummation of the Christian hope really does depend on how people cooperate now with Gods work.
