ABSTRACT

Charles Gore was the leading proponent of Anglican liberal Catholicism, and he sought to put the universal and catholic faith in a right relation to modern intellectual and moral problems. Gore identified himself with Catholic Anglicanism from an early age. Gore explains as the humanity of Christ is none the less a true humanity for being conditioned by absolute oneness with God, so the human activity is none the less free, conscious, rational, because the Spirit inspires it. Gore points to a radical identification between the Spirit and the apostolic leadership of the church: to lie to the apostles is to lie to the Holy Spirit. Gore explains: this is what gave to the earliest Christian life its peculiar characteristic of joy in the Holy Spirit. Gore explains: what the future holds in store for us is still a real embodiment, like the glorious body of Jesus.
