ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a glimpse, of the Claudelian theatre, Claude's reputation, as generally registered, rests above all on his plays though the comment has been passed on one of them, and that not the least well known, LAnnonce faite Marie, Its not a play, its a Liturgy!. A remark made by my late confrere Father John Baptist Reeves, OP, as relayed to me by another English Dominican, Fr Edward Booth, in a conversation of 30 November 2009. Fr Edward staged an English translation, Tidings Brought to Mary, at the Loreto College, Manchester, from 48 November, 1970. Antagonism and confrontation are ways in which Claudel presents and seeks to clarify a universal situation which may, through conflict, issue in a new achievement of harmony. There are hints of what lies on the far side of chaos or tragedy. Here the cosmological meets the theological, for these will indeed be hints of grace.
