ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a basic methodology that will be of use to, and can be adapted by, both students and working planting designers when they plan their approach to a project. The terminology used and procedures described, as far as possible, reflect what is common in professional practice, although, of course, there are many differences between different companies and practices, and between the related professions, such as planning and architecture, and between different countries. The chapter describes a design method based on the professional procedures and formal presentation or submission stages common in reasonably complex projects. All designers have a working method of some kind. They may have learned it in training, or it may have evolved over years of practice. It may be standard or unorthodox, but as long as it helps them to solve design problems and make the most of their imagination, then it is a sound design method.
