ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a design method based on the professional procedures and formal presentation or submission stages common in reasonably complex projects. The logic of the method comes from the creative demands of design and the need to respond to the client's requirements, and the same sequence and method can be used whether designing with all the elements of landscape or focusing on planting. The detail of the design method is likely to be of particular value to students and beginning designers. The chapter describes the design process through inception, analysis, synthesis and realization. Every design project begins with some form of contact between the client and the landscape architect. A brief for planting design might contain requirements such as local identity, habitat conservation, visual improvements, corporate identity, and community involvement. The purpose of the landscape assessment is to uncover the full potential of the site and to establish priorities for design.
