AsforLibya[i.e.thecontinentofAfrica],weknowittobe washedonallsidesbythesea,exceptwhereitisattachedtoAsia. ThisdiscoverywasfirstmadebyNecos,theEgyptianking,who ondesistingfromthecanalwhichhehadbegunbetweentheNile andtheArabianGulf,senttoseaanumberofshipsmannedby Phoenicians,withorderstomakeforthePillarsofHercules,and toreturntoEgyptthroughthem,andbytheMediterranean.The PhoenicianstooktheirdeparturefromEgyptbywayofthe ErythraeanSea,andsosailedintothesouthernocean.When autunmcame,theywentashore,wherevertheymightbe,and havingsownatractoflandwithcom,waiteduntilthegrainwas fittocut.Havingreapedit,theyagainsetsail;andthusitcameto passthattwowholeyearswentby,anditwasnotuntilthethird yearthattheydoubledthePillarsofHercules,andmadegood theirvoyagehome.Ontheirreturntheydeclared-!formypart donotbelievethem-thatinsailingroundLibyatheyhadthesun upontheirrighthand.InthiswaywastheextentofLibyafirst discovered.1
