ABSTRACT

A project is a set of activities of limited duration aimed at fulfilling an objective. Something that we intend to keep doing, then, is not a project. This is true for process measurements. A good way to deal with this is to conduct a periodic audit. This involves an individual or small team examining what has happened in the process and analysing those process conditions which are not routinely measured to confirm that they are still well within nominal expectations. To review our targets requires careful study of contracts and specifications, together with less formal customer requirements. Perhaps this could be carried out together with the review that determines whether we should be making new measurements. Any organization seeking to be world class must ask itself whether some new area needs attention, simply because it would be a good idea. Some measurements will certainly need new targets.
