ABSTRACT

This chapter presents resources for professional development that should prove equally useful, helping us find the ideas, time, and funding necessary for us to identify and achieve our teaching goals. Academics and administrators often view professional development through a deficit model by seeking to add what is missing from a teacher's portfolio of skills. Some institutions avoid using the phrase professional development because it implies that faculty has not fully formed as teacher-scholars. The College Music Society (CMS) offers several conference events that are part of ongoing professional development initiatives. The pre-conference technology workshop, held the day before the national conference, serves both new faculty and experienced teachers seeking to improve their technological fluency. The Professional Development Committee also presents a special session at the annual meeting exploring a topic of concern from various perspectives, such as steps to a successful conference presentation, preparing an effective tenure dossier, or renewing ones career by discovering new pursuits in scholarship and teaching.
