ABSTRACT
For Coates, the period of 1936-44 was a time of great consolidation, building upon the extraordinary level of popularity afforded him by the tremendous success of the ‘Knightsbridge’ March. In addition to an increased workload of composition, conducting, broadcasting and recording, it was a period of re-assessment of his compositional direction.
