ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a balanced analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of different positions in the debate. It analyses the philosophical and theological questions of the Intelligent Design (ID) discussion, showing how all sides can improve their argumentation. The term scientism' is understood as an epistemological claim, meaning a claim about the gathering of knowledge. The book analyses the relationship between ID, creationism, theistic evolutionism and naturalistic evolutionism. It gives the empirical debate over cosmology and biology and shows what kind of philosophical and theological disagreements emerge from these discussions. Proponents of ID emphasize the scientific nature of their design argument. The book focuses to understand the cognitive landscape of the debate and the structure of the ID debate. It gives theological issues of the debate. Both theistic evolutionists and proponents of ID argues the argumentation of the other side is theologically problematic.
