ABSTRACT

Sheffield has a long tradition of folk dancing, with older groups such as the Grenoside Sword Dancers having been around for over 150 years, while relative newcomer Sheffield City Morris was founded in 1975. Sheffield Polytechnic put on bands in its Howard Street Student Union; from 1976 to 1978, these included Tom Robinson, Adverts, Sham 69 and The Damned. For classical music lovers, the Halle Orchestra was active in Sheffield in 1968–84, performing as part of the Sheffield Philharmonic Concerts with programmes that included Liszt, Dvorak and Brahms, featuring soloists such as Peter Donohoe and Kyung-Wha Chang. Sheffield’s Irish community were well served by pubs such as The Barrel, The Red House and The Dog and Partridge, all of which still host regular folk sessions. At the Sheffield City Hall, live music fans could see the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver; Steve Hillage Band.
