ABSTRACT

The Council-run Colston Hall was very much the main venue in Bristol in 1976 being used for a variety of musical styles, including rock, pop, classical and military bands. A new addition to the Bristol classical music scene in 1976 was St George’s Church at Brandon Hill, run by the St George’s Music Trust. Two of the most influential clubs in Bristol—the Dug Out Club in Clifton and the Bamboo Club in St Pauls—were both in operation in late 1976, the former promoting a weekly heavy rock night every Monday and the latter playing a mix of reggae, punk, electro, funk, soul and dub. Jazz and blues were a major force in Bristol—part of the appeal of the Dug Out Club was its reputation for having been a major jazz club in the 1960s. The importance of folk in Bristol can be seen in the weekly ‘Focus on Folk’ column in the Bristol Evening Post.
