ABSTRACT

The university has a long-standing music business program, which he felt offered reasonable job security. Starting as a solo folksinger, Stephen Wade has expanded his activities to include recording, performing, creating theatrical works, authoring books and essays, and teaching. Combining one's talents in this way is a recipe not only for sustaining a long-term career, but for allowing each of these activities to enhance the creative potential of a musician. Musicians and singers who work in various aspects of the business—writing songs, arranging music, producing records, doing commercials or studio work—have to be extremely good at what they do and develop multiple skills. Mary Flower was one semester short of a theater degree at the University of Indiana when she turned to music as a profession. Molly Bohas grew up in a small town near Detroit, and as a child was a music fan and songwriter.
