ABSTRACT

Good intermediaries can nurture talent and help new artists avoid bad decisions that can haunt them for years to come. An artist should look carefully at the agency's artist roster, and determine whether the acts on the roster are musically relevant to the artist's musical style. The size of booking agencies varies from a single person to organizations like the William Morris Agency with its worldwide staff and agents who specialize in music, television, and movies. College audiences seek to present the latest "hip" music, and are somewhat open to experimenting with new sounds. Some organizations or music festivals require that all submissions be made through a company called Sonic Bids. Artie Traum was an example of a musician who carved out a career through his versatility, writing instructional materials, performing, writing songs and instrumental pieces, producing records, and even doing some freelance writing.
