ABSTRACT

This chapter takes a more pragmatic approach in helping the young journalist prepare for a long career in journalism. It focuses on possible skills tracks and suggests the student or new journalist to develop knowledge in at least one of those areas to enhance their employability. All groups had similar ideas of the most important skills a future journalist would need, but varied on the importance they attached to things like ethics and using reliable sources, writing ability, or digital skills. Portfolio working is a legitimate and, for many journalists, a desirable way of working. Social journalism is that seeing Twitter and Facebook as an extension of one's output, but it is also knowing how to use the material that is on social media. Many are in entertainment journalism, but there are also investigative journalists and organisations such as Bellingcat.
