ABSTRACT

Engagement with celebrity mourning facilitates cemetery tourism borne from the gravesite pilgrimage. This chapter considers how cemetery tourism is encouraged and promoted through celebrity fandom that draws on existing practices in heritage tourism and dark tourism. The aura of devastation that draws visitors emotionally to sites of dark tourism is seldom present at cemeteries, as the cemetery's character is typically aligned with creating a place of peaceful reflection. Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris is a model for drawing on celebrity to promote the cemetery as a tourist destination. Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles is a forerunner in creating social events on the cemetery grounds. A more significant impact on cemetery tourism will be an ongoing focus on the relationships between popular culture and cemeteries, particularly when a tour or travel experience is connected to an opportunity to engage with the cemetery in the role of a fan.
