ABSTRACT

There is perhaps nothing quite as de-motivating as difficulties in reading and spelling. The school curriculum essentially focuses around literacy, and reading in particular. This chapter suggests the key points that can have an impact on the motivating factors in relation to reading. One of the most important factors in any area of learning is self-esteem. This is particularly the case in dyslexia because if a positive self-concept is lacking then children with dyslexia will soon opt out of learning. Rewards can be important for motivation but they are normally only successful in the short term; for example, they can help children who need an initial boost, particularly if they are finding the task overwhelming. Research indicates that reading can help further develop skills in learning. This includes comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and general knowledge. It is important to build motivational strategies into teaching and any intervention that is being used.
