ABSTRACT

This book has focused on an often neglected but important type of film– films about youth, produced in Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China. Specifically, I have attempted to trace the evolution of youth films of the three cinemas over a 50-year span since the 1960s. ‘Youth is a historical construct’ (Grossberg, 1994: 27), with conceptions of ‘youth’ and ‘coming of age’ being inflected differently in each territory during each stage of its history. Youth films offer a way of identifying those changes and differences.
