ABSTRACT

This chapter considers different types of life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. Thousands of children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions are being taught in mainstream schools. The numbers are predicted to rise, and teachers therefore need to be equipped to support their needs. Teachers in the research generally and automatically assumed that a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition would only have a very short time to live. Many children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions successfully complete their education in schools and transition into full and successful adult lives. It became clear, therefore, that teachers need more support to understand the needs of children who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions to help ensure that they are supported to achieve the very best that they can in school. Many children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions experience some level of feeding difficulties, and in most cases this can be managed by supplementing their diet orally through high-energy drinks and medication.
