ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the level of engagement into the therapeutic alliance. The Bruges Model strives to build a relationship in which clients can become the expert of their own therapy. The Bruges flowchart help the therapist not to go too fast: This would only elicit resistance. At each level of the relationship, it will propose a certain number of possible interventions. A difficulty for which a solution can be found is a problem. Unfortunately, most difficulties are of a complex nature. Part of them are problems; part are limitations. Biological limitations include gender, age, genetic predispositions, chronic illnesses, physical disability, and so on. Social and cultural limitations include the era in which we live, the region we inhabit, the country where we were born, our family and cultural background, our education, and so on. Limitations may therefore also include emotional traumas we suffered in the past. The chapter presents case examples of clients who enter into an uncommitted relationship.
