Subaltern studies and geography

WithTariq Jazeel

The final part of the book investigates postcolonial interventions into the production of knowledge and their implications for Geography. This chapter introduces the influence of the Subaltern Studies collective, both in terms of the Collective’s early work on history writing and later interventions around the Eurocentrism of knowledge production. The chapter spends some time outlining the impact and implications for Subaltern Studies of Gayatri Spivak’s essay ‘Can the Subaltern Speak?’ It then proceeds to outline the impact that the Collective’s work has had on geography, and new developments in the emerging field of ‘Subaltern Geographies’.
