“The Play’s the Thing”: To Read or Not to Read Dramatic Literature

In this chapter, we want to make three quick points: Point one, don’t read a play like a textbook, like a novel, or like a non-fiction article. Point two, students don’t need to read an entire play: select meaningful and colorful excerpts, scenes, or monologues that fit in with your lesson or unit. Point three, use plays to engage participation and to challenge students to read and think more critically.
