ABSTRACT

Della Terza Dante’s Comedia is one of those literary works that has stirred the most diverse reception, depending on its ‘interpretative communities’. The canto is dominated by the figures of Farinata degli Uberti, a leader of the Tuscan Ghibellines, and Cavalcante de’ Cavalcanti, father of Guido Lucchini, Dante’s friend and fellow poet. In fact, Dante corrects himself and takes Cavalcante out of his drama, by interrupting his punishment in action. Contini’s reading of Dante further contributed to overcoming Croce’s dualistic vision of the Comedia, as well as providing fundamental critical accounts on how Dante’s style attained the integration of inspiration with historicity and materiality, and of poetry with ethical values. Susanna Pasolini’s reception of Contini’s ‘Preliminari sulla lingua del Petrarca’ coincided with a time when Gramsci’s works, published by Einaudi between 1947 and 1951,62 were having a remarkable impact on Italian culture.
