ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the importance of civic-mindedness as an overarching professional capability. It highlights that successful professional practice hinges on the acquired disposition to cope with uncertainty, unpredictability, challengeability and contestability, extending the argument to being able to deal with other forms of adversity at work. The chapter draws tighter linkages between the three core attributes:openness to experience, moral commitment and responsible community engagement and the notion of civic-mindedness. Openness to experience is the key disposition to develop in students as it enables them to confront the manifold challenges associated with professional practice; yet, equally important are the values of moral commitment and responsible community engagement. The chapter argues that the three attributes together represent civic-mindedness, which can be conceptualised as an overarching professional capability. It intimates that civic-mindedness is the central capability underlying civic professionalism', which is distinguished by a strong community orientation.
