ABSTRACT

This chapter consists of a simulation of a hypothetical case on trade agreement negotiations. In particular, the bilateral trade agreement simulation is a role-playing exercise designed to reproduce as close as possible the realities of what happens behind the scenes and during negotiations of an International Trade agreement. The objective is to provide students with a practical experience through which they can learn and appreciate the often-unknown dynamics of trade negotiations. The ideal size is ten students per group, but it can be adapted to fit smaller or bigger numbers. Each group should be divided in two sub-groups: one with seven students to represent domestic interests and the other with three students to represent the negotiators. The domestic interests sub-group should include representatives of the Executive, Legislative, Private Sector and Public Interest. The remaining three students form the negotiators group, which will choose the head of delegation for the negotiations.
