ABSTRACT

Any indigenous tale that believes in the creation of woman as the first human being can be classified under Isis Panthea tales. Some of the characteristic features of Isis Panthea tales are as follows: they deal with an omnipotent Creator and mortal beings. In the Hopi story from Arizona, called The Four Creations, there is a reference to the Creator' and the Creation song, where the Spider Woman is the first woman born on this earth. The Spider Woman is the creator of life, and also the Creation song representing the different forms of procreation. The Spider Woman symbolises interconnectedness and propagates the ecofeminist belief in bringing together the various threads in the web of life. The Amma-I-Appan motif communicates the importance of respecting man and woman alike and paves ways towards a society that believes in peaceful coexistence.
