ABSTRACT

Museums are negotiating their role and place in a contemporary society by introducing a contemporary media ecology. While much is written, thought, and said about the participatory museum paradigm, how visitors may take new roles in museum communication, and how museum institutions may relate in new ways to society, less is said about how this relates to museum practices. This chapter focuses on how participatory methods may be introduced in museum exhibition design practices, and discusses the challenges that museum professionals may meet inside their own institution when established methods for exhibition design are changed with participatory ones.
