ABSTRACT

Michael is fond of telling people that I helped appoint him to the Institute of Education in 1967. It is true I was on the interviewing panel, but Basil Bernstein, who was then Head of Sociology, had spotted that this young science teacher whom he taught on the Essex MA, and had taken his sociology degree as a mature student, would be an asset to the department. Nothing I said would have had any influence. Michael was duly appointed, and when he moved to London, my husband and I invited him to stay in our family while he looked for a place to live. Cyril and l had our young children living with us, and Michael quickly became a member of the family, staying for a year rather than the month or two we had all expected.
