ABSTRACT

A montage can be a hugely valuable element in a documentary. Regardless of the specific function of the montage readers are building, there is one common denominator: a successful montage exploits patterns. documentary editors have already explored how finding patterns is a fundamental part of documentary filmmaking in general; it is even more true of the montage, in which these patterns are distilled and refined into tiny chunks of meaning that flow into each other. A montage can also be a much shorter affair, quickly summing up a point with the rapid-fire repetition of a concept or phrase. Repetition is also part of the media montage: a series of news broadcasters flood the screen in quick succession, each of their statements echoing the one before. When creating media montages, also consider whether reader want the audience to look at the clip at face value or with more scrutiny.
