ABSTRACT

Radio came along with its news and information at national and local levels and newspapers survived. Then television. The television put pictures with sound, creating anxiety in radioland but still radio survived - as did newspapers and magazines. This is proof that newspapers and magazines will also shake off the threat of the Worldwide Web; changed forever but able to sustain the surge. Newspaper and magazine publishers grew curious about the potential of the Web in or around 1997 and 1998, in turn emboldened by the newest, fanciest conference presentation their managing directors had attended or in some cases making tentative steps because their boss had insisted it should be done. What newspapers failed to do though on a large enough scale was provide interesting content unique to those communities or audiences that complemented the print version. Online journalism and social media have opened up wider possibilities to respond quickly to a work of art.
