ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the four quotes from Wendell Berry, the American novelist, activist, and farmer. "A community economy", wrote Wendell Berry, "is not an economy in which well-placed persons can make a 'killing'. A fast-moving market economy attacks quality of life by demanding our time. Consumerism can wreak a kind of havoc on relationships, the sort that creeps in anytime we apply market language to marriage. "The best way to keep the consumer culture from dominating your marriage", writes Doherty, is to see yourself as a citizen of your marriage, which is another way to say be intentional, committed and part of a community. The chapter discusses some examples of how our market culture perceives and describes the body, as well as look at how advertising influences how we think, what we value, and how we spend our time.
