ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines children's early writing and address the continuity in children's learning to ensure a clear articulation of practices as children transition from home to preschool and to school. It illustrates the drawing and writing journey of young children with illustrations of the progression from sign creation to sign use. The book Illustrates of very young children's exploration of writing tools provide evidence of children's eagerness to engage with written meaning-making. It discusses two overlapping transitions; one is the transition from preschool to school, and the second is the transition from drawing to conventional written language. The book explores aspects of the writing process and illustrates the progressions in children's learning as they produce more complex texts for a wide range of purposes and audiences.
