ABSTRACT

This chapter we will consider the issues of learning to write as a process which transpires for many children across the last year of preschool and the first year of school. Many children transition from sign creation to sign use at the same time as they transition from preschool into formal schooling. Sign creation refers to children's scribbling and drawing as they creatively express themselves in ways that are not restricted by rules. Children's journeys in learning to write are all different as they are greatly impacted by the experiences they have prior to and outside preschool and school. The term transition is often associated with children starting school, although humans experience transitions every day across their lifetime. Most children experience this unique transition across a period of two or three years intersecting with the transition from preschool to school. Children also have the opportunity to build strong bonds with the preschool educators in the informal preschool environment.
