ABSTRACT

Korean is one of the most difficult languages to learn, and there is a great need to expand and develop pedagogical methodology and linguistic resources for teaching this language. Korean has been designated a Critical Language by the US government, meaning one for which there is large demand for language professionals but little supply. Although there is one Korean frequency dictionary, Meaning Frequency Dictionary of Basic Korean Vocabulary, historically, various surveys of frequency have been conducted for identifying statistical populations of morphemes, words, and eojeols, which reflects the agglutinative characteristics of Korean. Since the late 1990s, when large-size corpora began to be built up, more frequency-based research has appeared. The corpora used as the resources for this frequency dictionary are a part of the 20th Century Balanced Korean Corpora developed by the Institute of Language and Information Studies at Yonsei University since 2013.
