ABSTRACT
The discussion of the epistolary form in Chapter 5 suggested that the role of the physical text is a significant factor in the presentation of the journal as a narrative device. Narratives of inclusion and transmission develop in parallel with the unfolding drama and tell their own tale in the competitive economy and evolution of the text.The physical existence of a letter ordiary is thus a vital part of the action taking place,encompassing form and plot,asking questions about compilation and provenance and emphasizing the mimetic function of the fictional diary in a hybrid narrative.
