ABSTRACT

Formed in 2002, Freefall Dance Company is an innovative, collaborative partnership between Birmingham Royal Ballet and Fox Hollies Performing Arts College, a local authority maintained school for pupils aged eleven to nineteen with severe learning difficulties in the south of the city of Birmingham. The seed for Freefall was sown at workshops at the school in 1992 that were designed to support The Company, Fox Hollies’ after-school theatre group. Initially, Fox Hollies was just another school that the company was engaged with but the possibilities for providing a training and performing platform for some of the school’s highly gifted young people quickly became clear. Since then, Freefall has become firmly established as part of the city’s dance landscape, performing, holding workshops in schools, participating in conferences and playing a role in teacher education [Photo 5.2a].
