ABSTRACT

This chapter takes a critical look at the idea of providing access and inclusion to a broad group of twelve- to thirteen-year-old school children in a collaborative project between a professional contemporary dance company, an orchestra and educational institutions in Denmark, with the purpose of staging a public performance including eight school classes at a theatre in Copenhagen. From the viewpoint of the school teachers and dance educators, who were contracted to lead a class each, the purpose was also to explore and attract attention to how dance can be relevant from an educational perspective. These diverse purposes raise questions as to what is possible in a project that has an artistic purpose, especially in the context of the production, and as to the importance of an agreed purpose when multiple players are involved in collaboration.
