ABSTRACT

Regardless of how accepting and welcoming a studio is, there is a perception of what a dancer should look like. I don’t necessarily mean that the dancer should look like their ability; I think I interpret other’s thoughts that way from my own experiences and who I participated with. It is also about feeling successful in order to enjoy myself. It is important to note that I don’t claim to speak for all people with disabilities. I sometimes wish I knew someone with similar challenges to me. Even with a positive attitude it can be tricky being the only one with this kind of challenge in a group. There is maybe something about people with physical disabilities, or those close to them, being more self-conscious.
