The provision of carefully tailored CPD will help to build colleagues’ confidence in this area and develop a consistent approach through the school.

An outline plan of CPD sessions might incorporate objectives such as ensuring that colleagues have:

–a sound knowledge of the underlying causes of behaviour issues; – an understanding of factors involved in social, emotional and mental health welfare; –an awareness of various ‘trigger points’ in different lessons, in the playground, in

the dining hall, outside school; – the confidence to ask experienced colleagues for help and advice; –a range of strategies to effectively manage whole-class behaviour; – strategies to address individual needs and reduce barriers to learning.
