ABSTRACT

This chapter explains resistance variation due to length, cross-sectional area, type of material and temperature variation. It discusses the resistor colour coding/ohmic values. The chapter suggests that electrical resistance depends on four factors. It provides the resistance and tolerance of a fixed resistor from its colour code. The chapter addresses the resistance and tolerance of a fixed resistor from its letter and digit code. An electron travelling through the wires and loads of an electric circuit encounters resistance. Resistance is the hindrance to the flow of charge. The resistance to the flow of charge in an electric circuit is analogous to the frictional effects between water and the pipe surfaces as well as the resistance offered by obstacles that are present in its path. Resistance variation due to length, cross-sectional area, type of material and temperature variation are explained in this chapter, with calculations to aid understanding.
