ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 considers spatial elements of shared living. We address the impact of shared and ‘private’ space on relationships between co-residents, questioning how far it is possible to design architectural spaces which enhance conviviality, and exploring how participants managed the balance between privacy and communality within the spaces available to them. We also explore how the sensory experiences of sharing were central to the success or failure of relationships between residents. Finally, we consider the impact of differing orientations towards and levels of control over décor, noises, sounds and smells and their often quite profound impact upon household relationships.
