ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of a Kim, Monica, Wazhma, and Emmie. Monica used a variety of other strategies to improve the relationships between the parent community and the school. Monica realized that deeper understanding and acceptance by parents of applied learning rather than simply drill-as-homework would take time and she committed herself to sustaining her involvement with parents beyond the duration of the project. Emmie’s project goal was to improve overall student engagement and facilitate effective learning partnerships among students, teachers and parents. She linked the mentoring opportunity with the challenge of how to make the best use of this under-used educational asset, as well as how to integrate new iPad technology for her young learners. Another strategy Wazhma used to improve students’ self-regulation and accountability was the development of tasks that increased students’ control over learning and assessment. Wazhma designed a range of learning activities for mathematics and reading that provided her students with choice.
