ABSTRACT

This chapter establishes how environmental journalism (EJ) fits within the environmental communication (EC) discipline, then turns to some of the theoretical background of online pedagogy, placing it within the context of distance education. Using the present EJ course as a case study, the chapter addresses instructional design and provides sample content to illustrate different facets of EJ in a distance and online setting. The chapter analyzes the design of a distance education course in EJ to be offered by a new online journalism school as part of a professional certificate in journalism. Open School of Journalism (OSJ) refers to its offerings as "distance education" because each course has a hard copy course text, written by the course author, situating the course in a print/online hybrid environment. The online/distance medium and the non-university environment, then, seem to offer great opportunities for educating people with an interest in EJ to become ethical, globally minded environmental communicators.
