ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how the environmental communication classroom can become a safe and creative space for students to transition from passive learners to active change agents through building relationships and collaborative partnerships with community organizations. To foster an environment for student growth between classroom and community, the chapter designs the four strategies that guide the selection of readings, activities, and assignments: mini-activities, theory to action, community assignments and audience-driven creativity. The mini-activities show students how they can become change agents in their community, while the community assignments give them experience in making community change. By exploring the ways rhetorical and behavioral perspectives can alter environmental outcomes in theory to action and audience-driven creativity, students have a foundation for developing their own creative perspectives. The blog portfolio is designed as a digital space for students to write down and work through their creative perspectives.
