ABSTRACT

This chapter creates a visual form of environmental communication using free online infographic tools, prompting students to put into practice a variety of concepts learned in an introductory environmental communication course. The planning and creation of an infographic involves visual expression and creativity, embedding basic communications skills that are transferable to other types of media; learners develop multifaceted communication skills as they visualize complex concepts and distill them into a simple message for a targeted audience. Infographics are increasingly used to explain and map environmental issues in publications and on social networks. For the assignment, students should define a particular problem or issue within the context of environmental ideologies as defined by Corbett. Assessment should be based on whether or not all the required elements from the instructions were included and how successfully they implemented their environmental communication goals.
