ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author begins by outlining the challenges facing pedagogues following the expansion of two-year-old funded places. She goes on to describe the 'Being Two' project developed by Pen Green to address these challenges by enabling nursery teams to reflect on and develop their work with two-year olds and their families. From September 2014, the widening provision for two-year olds whose family circumstances met certain eligibility criteria meant that many nursery teams were expanding their provision for the youngest children for the first time. The focus of the Being Two project was to improve the quality of experiences in settings for two-year olds and their families, and to support better outcomes for children and families through developing local professional development networks with Early Years settings in each area. Once teams had established their 'Image of the Child', they could then consider their role as practitioners in supporting this image.
